2005 Reflections

Image
How quickly they grow. My coffee shop ritual with Yang Yang, the youngest, is now numbered, since he'll be going to kindergarten next year. Sigh, his roti canai with dahl. The fatboy jr can wallop one whole roti canai on his own, almost. Next year Girl will be in Standard Two, and Aun Aun will be in Bridging Class, the class that prepares them for standard one. Let's see. Highlights of 2005. Off the top of the head, highlights for this year would be the 1. The trip to Croatia, AND BORDEAUX , for Godpa's 40th birthday. 3 days of orgiastic wining and dining, all expenses paid, with good friends, and wonderful surroundings. 2. The test kit that showed a POSITIVE....and ensured I will have another kid to bring for the coffee shop ritual in a couple of years. That picture there is the test kit. Two lines means a positive, to the unitiated. 3. Trip to Disneyland, with the family. Parents, sister, bro in law, their kids, our kids.... enough said in a separate entry. 4. Getting to

Bye For Now, Gorgeous Woman

Usually words flow quite glibly from my tongue, or in this case, fingers. But I am actually at a loss as to what to say really. I guess I owe Shades a big thanks, for had it not been for him, I wouldn't have made your acquaintance, which really would have been my loss. It's different just admiring an instructor from afar, than actually getting to know somewhat better the heart and soul behind the body. When I first saw your name on the notice board in 2004, (I was an infant member of FF then, and probably a foetus for GX classes), I was quite in awe, because you had been labelled something of a superhero.....(wonder woman, you said). My first memory of you was when the thursday combat instructor was under evaluation, and you looked very exhausted, and just plonked yourself in a corner as you watched her teaching. I thought you must be quite intimidating, coz the poor lass looked very nervous.... My next encounter was when YOU replaced that class on thursday lunchtime, and that&

Love Is A Many Splendored Thing

Image
I got this sms bright and early one morning, at about 7am. I thought it was a joke, so I didnt bother replying until much later. It turns out it was a guy who actually wanted to buy it to give his girlfriend, coz the numbers were her birthdate. Howwwww romantic is that. Anyway, it turns out he wanted it cheap, to tough titties lah. Too much hassle.

Yuletide Yellings (Revised Standard Version)

Image
Brief update of the yuletide weekend, as I have exactly 15 minutes to do this. Friday, no exercise, cantata at night, had to be there by 6.15pm, for 8pm performance. Went well I suppose. No photographs since wife can't handle two kids and camera at the same time. (3rd kid refused to come). The whole show went along smoothly, except for one hiccup, which was the video clip of kids wishing Jesus "Happy Birthday". I can't understand why these things always happen; technology seems to fail us at the most inopportune moments. Saturday morning, nearly sprained ankle in Body Step class. That would have been a minor crisis seeing as to how the entire weekend required me to be on my feet, except when I was legless... which didn't happen this time....sadly, almost. The step instructor even gave out Xmas sweets, how sweet of him hor. I still haven't eaten it. There's even a Xmas song cooldown. Sprained ankle aside, it was a great class. Oh, some person or phantom lef

Friday Before Christmas

Image
(Warning: Food related) Christmas has really crept up on us (on me anyway, and by the sounds of it, shades as well, and probably a lot of others), still can't believe it's only 2 days away. Tonight is our cantata. So unreal. Hope and pray everything goes well, and smoothly. It's actually not a major drama production; all familiar christmas classics, with congregation participation, backed by a choir, so the congregation gets to sing along for some songs. Nothing very exciting has transpired. Last night, my in laws celebrated the winter solstice. My own family has never observed this particular event, so it is a fairly new thing for me. And I can't really say that these glutinous rice balls have been part of our upbringing either. I usually find them way too sweet, but this one that we had, at the golden phoenix in equatorial bangi, is nice because the soup is not too sweet, nor is it overly gingerly. And the balls itself are filled with a lovely black sesame s

My Egg Can Stand, Thank You Anak Sri. And Disneyland Itinerary

Image
22nd December, Winter Solstice. Shortest day of the year? Also, its when chinese eat tong yuen, those glutinous rice balls. Of course, no youth of today know its significance. And since I am youthful, I also don't know. About 13 years ago, my children's Godmother, (of course she wasn't godmother yet in those days), told me that on this day, "gor dong" 22nd December, you can make eggs stand. Of course, being the unbeliever that I was, I pooh poohed the idea. Another friend and me brought Anak Sri to lunch at Bonton, (those days in Jln Kia Peng), and betted with her, RM10, that she couldn't stand our eggs. (We brought some). She actually managed to stand it. There in Bonton!!! Years have come and gone, and I get the same pooh pooh reaction, now that I am a believer. Anyway, this morning I tried and lo and behold, my egg is standing. Thank you, SJL, for this most useless but entertaining piece of information. Part 2 - I got a call late last night from dear frie

Have Your Cake and Eat It Too

I was actually half way posting this when the PC hung. How exasperating. Anyway, for the benefit of the non gym goers, who couldn't care two hoots about my sweat infused experiences, or who my favourite instructors are, but yet have to wade through the labyrinth of words to reach the food part of this blog, I have started a subsidiary blog, http://fatboyrecipes.blogspot.com specifically for recipes only. It is a cold, soul-less, impersonal site, but it's easier for referencing, to the amateur cooks, like myself. Anyway, I tried on the present that I got from GW yesterday, and thankfully, it fits like a glove, so I don't resemble (at least I don't think I do) a ham yoke chong (glutinous rice dumpling) wrapped in lotus leaf, bursting at the seams. And I was also privy to the video clip that was presented at her official farewell, which was very moving. It comprised the achievements of FF over the last year, clips and pics of launches, events, and bloopers. Very well put

Okay, Satisfied a Craving

When the realisation struck that I haven't had my endorfin boost for more than 48 hours, naturally the fidgetiness set in. Just before I headed to town for a work appointment, I glanced the online schedule for classes, and lo and behold, the body pump class at lunchtime was replaced by "candidate" for 2nd favourite pump instructor. Great pump class. For some reason, felt very exhausted. Those tricep kickbacks can be tiring after a while. Dunno how King Kong could do so many with Naomi Watts in his hands. GW had left a very nice surprise for me at the reception. Thanks so much. [big virtual hug]. Okay, craving satisfied.

Last Minute Diva Practice

Our church is having a Christmas Cantata this Friday night. Since I don't know how to upload a pdf file onto the blog, I'll just have to link it to HL, who has a flyer of the cantata on hers. Originally, I kinda committed to the organising committee (where I am also involved), that I probably cannot attend rehearsals until nearer the time of the cantata, as rehearsals were on Sunday afternoon, and well, with a family of 3 kids, ..... oh well, I don't want to sound like a whiner. Aneeway, December crept up on us quite stealthily, and lo and behold, we're staring Christmas, and by extension, the cantata, in the face. I attended the rehearsal last Sunday, to the friendly mocking of friends commenting about my "diva" appearance. Actually, I am no diva, and certainly no natural musician. I was at quite a loss; it's almost like sitting for an SPM paper without any preparation. To rectify the situation, I had late night one on one private tuition with the

I Need More Rest on Weekends

Image
Ironically, I need mondays usually to recover from the weekends. This one was no different. Friday evening - First time attending this legendary body pump instructor's class. Ben Lee. YHSMOM has been telling me to attend his class for awhile now, and since his days are numbered in that slot, ( shades has usurped the friday evening pump and combat slots in MJH wef january), I thought I should give it a try. I guess people don't become legends for no good reason. This chappie was seriously good. What makes a good instructor, I often ask myself? Am I just biased? I guess its like screen actors.....they just need that "presence". Some have it, some errr....sad to say, have less. But don't worry, shades, you oso got screen presence lah. And he was very personable as well. I guess one trait of a good instructor is in making the students feel involved. (this is not an invitation to simply call names in class). Friday night - Very happening. Hung out in Tesco. (they clos

Sweetest American Hero

An excerpt from what must be one of the sweetest gestures an offspring would do for their parents, so much so my godson's father wants to store this email for posterity, so that Nic, my godson, will do likewise in years to come. Excerpt: Whenever I go home, I usually tell only my dad, so that my mom will be surprised. This time, however, I have told my mom, and my dad thinks that I am still offshore in ****** waiting for my visa. So we've planned that they will go to dinner before a Christmas theatre performance, and I will walk out to serve the wine. Hah! That should make my dad flip!! (Names of people and places have been deleted to protect the innocent, as requested by email originator) Unlike the kids of today, who'd chuck you in an old folks home faster that you can say the word "WILL".

Fat Boy Bakes Alone, Literally

Image
Wife (who still hasn't noticed missing goatee) called me in afternoon to say they are dumping me to visit her brother who lives in sierramas, until late at night. They meaning she and the kids. Yay, some ME time. Normally, this would have been the clarion call to make plans to go out drinking and make merriment, but as I said in previous post, it somehow doesn't feel like December. So actually I perused the on line gym schedule to see if there were any classes I'd like to attend. The two possibilities would have been gorgeous woman's combat class, at Curve, or shades combat class at subang jaya.....nahhhh, sorry, that leaves one possibility. But I couldn't make it to the Curve on time anyway. So, no classes, no drinks, no friends..........what a miserable existence. Anyway, since there was peace and quiet at home, it was the perfect time to get around to pilot project - GINGERBREAD XMAS COOKIES FOR FRIENDS. Had already experimented on a particular recipe for gingerb

Food Photography

I was quite surprised when KSL suggested I should take up food photography, via an sms. I didn't know what she meant. Did she mean, I should do a course, or I should give up cooking, and take photos, what?!!!! Anyway, it was quite flattering, coz she said all the food here looks so appetising, esp the hong kong ones. Actually, food photography (not very different from food pornography actually, makes one lust and salivate) is something that I might be interested to pursue. Anyone has any leads? Of course, while we're at it, I would like to become a celebrity Chef as well. Anyone has any leads? Where can I send my resume to? Amateur cook seeks position as Celebrity Chef. Reminds me of a lawyer friend, who wanted to apply to the army for the post of General. Doesn't really feel very December-ish to me this year. Although we are careening towards Christmas and New Year at break neck speed, plans are still in disarray, and AARGH, I have no new year eve plans. Can th

Disneyland - 2nd Thoughts

Image
First, the cursory gym mention. You never realise a good thing until you don't have it anymore, they say. Well, true to a certain extent. The previously Monday evening pump instructor, Mr Robot, swapped places with pretty girl from Tuesday, and now is teaching Tuesday slot. I was ambivalent about Robot's classes before, but yesterday, I realised that I actually enjoyed his mechanical precision and efficiency with which he conducts the class. He probably is quite a shy fellow. Averts all direct gaze, UNLIKE SOME OTHERS, who DELIBERATELY try to make me laugh. Was actually very tired, so only did pump, and in any case, had to make pizzas for appetizers and apple pie for dessert. Blog fever must be subsiding, I so forgot to take pics of the food. The pizza was packed with all the family's favourite ingredients. Scallops, bacon, mushroom, avocado, pesto. Apple pie was good too. Still got half a pie left, if anyone wants it, email me. Disneyland. Been meaning to mention this, but

Body Attack Revisited

Was chatting with fave combat instructor yesterday morning, when found out the Curve (and probably all the other Selangor based FFs) were having lots of daytime classes coz of the public holiday. Since when have the sultan's birthdays become weekdays again? I thought they had been relegated to saturdays. Anyway, tempted as I was to skive off work to attend the fellow's combat class at 12pm, at the Curve (and finally de-virginise my passport membership), I was having second thoughts, until I scrolled the on line schedule, and what caught my eye was BODY ATTACK, taught by Gorgeous Woman and Macho Nippon Girl. That kinda settled it for me. Firstly, coz GW was teaching, and secondly, Body Attack is usually at such weird hours, I never get to go. So I thought, what's an hour and a half away from work anyway. Afterall, I skipped lunch. So happily I trotted over to the Curve, my first ever passport experience. (my previous two times at Axis have been on guest pass)....Very

The Wind After The Storm

Image
[Not to be read by people who are easily disgusted] You ever had diarrhoea? Well, I've been rushing to the loo every hour for the past 24 hours, until last night. (ie from Sat night till Sun night). You know how it is, and the absolute relief when you can actually fart a dry fart!!!!! Hence, the wind after the storm. The weekend. Interesting one, to say the least. Beginning with friday evening Body Pump class. There was an "incident". It a first for me, whereby the instructor had to resort to calling names from the register, coz there werent enough bars. So obviously there was an unregistered person in the class. Anyway, the "culprit" was this woman, so looked with utter disbelief that her name wasn't on the list. She sashayed over to the girl at the door, who was holding the register, and reprimanded her for not putting her name on the list, and saying "this is so unfair", etc etc. Not a pretty sight. Honestly, I figure, she couldn't have been
