World Book Day

I'm not sure if "World Book Day" is an actual day, or just a phrase used by Times Bookshop, but who cares, there's a 25% discount on ALL BOOKS for members, on the first day. Thereafter it's 20% off, for another two days.

Headed to Times, BSC after dinner, with the intention of getting Nigella's Forever Summer. You'd think at over RM100 per book, Nigella's boobs would hardly be selling like hotcakes, but surprisingly, there wasn't a single copy (ok, there was one) of any of her books around. The manager said they had ordered more, but the stock hasn't arrived. Sigh. What a bummer. Anyway, not one to let a 25% discount go so easily, I ended buying these three books.

I should state for the record, that I am not a Jamie Oliver fan per se, but nothing exasperates me more than not having books in sets, if they do come in sets. As it is, godson's parents saw fit to give me "RETURN OF THE NAKED CHEF" some years ago, as a birthday or Xmas presnet, so really, for years, that book has been crying out for its prequel, THE NAKED CHEF.

The other book, the Penang Nyonya one, is almost as expensive as Jamie's book. In fact, local cookbooks are exorbitantly priced. And the MOST exasperating thing about them is, they often omit to mention SERVES HOW MANY. ie, for that quantity of ingredients. The fact that wife later on pointed out that the book is from Singapore, made me kick myself even harder.

The PILLSBURY Best Desserts Book, arrrgh, what a cheat!!!! Some of the cakes have "Pillsbury Cake Mix" as ingredients. Talk about rip off. And I'm a kid when it comes to recipe books. They must have pictures, lots of them. If possible, for every recipe. While the Pillsbury book is adequately illustrated, it could do with a lot more.

I knew eventually all this blogging esp about dinners, will be at my own peril. Already I have been severely chastised by Red Planet, for not having hosted dinner for his group for awhile, and they feel they've been relegated to the "old friends" category.....hahaha. On the one hand, if you DONT blog about the dinner, the dinner guests might think, what the heck, were we not worthy of mention, but on the other hand, this happens!!! You get accused of being partial to certain groups....etc etc. HARLOW, the woman was in town from OVERSEAS, understand!!!

Gym wise, usual Thursday step class, arrived just in time. What's the difference between a can of sardines and FSI's class? (yes, even a lunch time class)....Ans: There's more space in the sardine can.

There were quite a lot of hilarious episodes yesterday. For starters, he said, March Forward, when he meant march around the board. Then during a short break, one chap went back to the wrong board. Anyway, it was a great class as usual. Got a bit left behind in track 9, speed track for one of the stradle thingies, but eugh, it was quite scary, once I got in sync with the instructor, I felt this out of body experience.... can't describe it, but it was like the mind had gone into auto pilot, and had no control over the leg movement.

Good thing about lunchtime classes is it frees up the evenings after work, so could bring the kids swimming, and even managed to pander to their wishes, and baked Choc Chip cookies for Boy no1, and cream puffs for daughter.

Gee ... sometimes I wished I was your neighbour! With the amount of baking and food you produce in your house ... I could do with some sharing and putting on a couple of pounds!! Cream puffs for daughter .. have you ever tried them with a savoury-filling aka santan-based?? Equally if not more artery-blocking ... but so YUM!

yar, i've served cream puffs with a smoken salmon mousse before. not bad. but nothing like artery clogging cream and drippy chocolate sauce....

hmm... now did he really mean to say boobs or was it a subconscious typo due to his wandering mind...

pick yin: yes, if we did live in a friendly neighbourhood, that may well be the case. alas, i live in a neighbourhood where no one acknowledges the existence of the other, and two houses down the road, the idiots actually sometimes blare loud music till the wee hours in the morning. i would love to have neighbours that i would want to share the baking with. it's very hard to bake for a small family...

tzuanne: very sharp. you did not fail me.
